John M. Meyer was first sworn in as a Skagit County Superior Court Judge in January 1997. From 1995-97 he sat as a Skagit County District Court Judge.  From 1975-1995 he was a partner in the Mount Vernon law firm of Gilbert and Meyer, where his practice emphasized civil litigation.  From 1973-75 he was a Staff Attorney for the Federal Power Commission, Washington, D.C. 

 

Judge Meyer’s professional activities include:  Trustee, Washington State Trial Lawyers, 1986-1990; President, Skagit County Bar Association, 1993-4; Treasurer, Washington State Superior Court Judges’ Association, 2000-03, 2005-06; Chair, Skagit County Law and Justice Council, 2003-04; Dean, Washington State Judicial College, 2004-05.  He was recognized as Judge of the Year by the Washington State Association for Justice in 2009.  Judge Meyer is active in judicial and legal education, lecturing regularly to professional and community groups on the legal system.

 

His community activities include: Past President, University of Washington Alumni Association; Trustee, Skagit Valley College, 1993-7; Past President, Skagit Valley College Foundation; Member, Skagit Valley College Hall of Fame; Past President, Skagit Valley Family YMCA; Past President, Kiwanis Club of Mount Vernon; Past Chair, Skagit Homeless Youth Task Force; Former Board Member, The Vietnam Traveling Wall Foundation; Former Board Member, Celtic Arts Foundation.

 

Judge Meyer graduated from the University of Washington in 1968 with a BS/BA in Education and received his law degree in 1971 from University of California, Hastings College of the Law.  He has been married for 41 years to Susan Johnson Meyer.  They have two married adult daughters and four granddaughters.
